Hal Eagar : #18 Do you like to use hardware or software?
DPI:
Do you like to use hardware or software? PC/Mac vs. DVD/Mixer?
I prefere Software over hardware all the way. I'm a programmer so that's pretty obvious for me. But to go into the details the fact that I can get the software to do a lot of various things that that would each take a different piece of hardware and the fact that I can re use the computer just about every day not just when i'm running a video effect is a big plus. And because it's a general purpose machine it's easy to find a computer when you need one too.
Also as i've mentioned I like realtime generated animation and the type of uber flexability that you can get with a software system. I guess that a dvd player is as easy to find as a computer, but the computer is more flexable.
Not everything is possible with just a general purpose pc of course. I have my bag of add ons and extra little devices. Scan converters, video capture devices, DA's, switches etc... But they are all pretty cheap mass market stuff just like the computer itself. Besides being cheap, mass market stuff is easy to replace. So although it's less dependable than really high end video gear it's pretty solid (After all it's meant for the masses) and easily replaced or backed up.
I know a lot of people are afraid of using computers because they fear failure. And some people say they don't trust hard drives.

Amelia Project
We've borrowed a VGA
Distribution Amplifier or, 'splitter' as a simple way to send one
signal to two projectors. I personally own a VERY cheap 'splitter'
that looks like a V. But i wanted to borrow the amplifier so that
there was no signal loss or messing with the image in either projector.
Each
projector is projecting the same image and when we only wish to see one
projector we'll use an analog shutter system (read cardboard and
pulleys). I also borrowed the DUalhead 2Go in case the combination of
the splitter and long cables cause interference with the image. In
that case i'd rewrite in Isadora where we are sending each image. But
we might still use the shutter system so that the black square doesn't
get projected.
Projections are on the back wall and on the floor.

Residency Exit Survey
Some final Questions about your residency. Some to help document the process and some to help plan the future of the residency.
Hal Eagar : #19 Do you like finished tools or programming environments?
DPI:
Do you like finished tools or programming environments? Watch out/grid vs. Isadora/jitter/vvvv ?
I prefer tools. But not too raw. The question does not even go so far as to suggest Java, C, or other such viable options, I guess it really should. But that's too raw for me. I am in a hurry and want the hard work done for me. Sure in a framework or using libraries that work is done but like I said I'm in a hurry, and I'm lazy too.
What was it Lary Wall said were the virtues of a good programmer. Laziness, Hubris, and Impatience.
So anyway I love Isadora that hits the sweet spot between flexible programing and ease of use. That spot is probably different for everyone. It may be watchout for some or java for others.
And I do think jitter is awesome, but I may be a little too lazy for it, when Isadora gets me there faster.
I also love flash, it also hits the spot for me; easy but powerful. And it's growing in features like crazy. Maybe it's getting too complex and it might be just as easy to use some other framework to do some jobs I do with flash. But it really has features and strengths across a large spectrum of uses and styles. So why learn another system, I'm hooked in to just focusing on getting really proficient in this one.

2008 - 2009 DPI Artist Residency Application

Galapagos : screening of Nolan's Run
Nolan's Run
A feature documentary about the 2004 Libertarian Presidential race.
SCREENING: Sept. 22, 8PM $5
Galapagos Art Space
16 main street, Brooklyn (DUMBO)
93 minutes with a Q&A post-movie
Charles Hamilton, a Cinematographer at DPI's sister company Learning Worlds, has been quietly working on a mysterious film late at night here at the offices for some time. And we are now lucky enough to get to see it at Galapagos.
Even better news? There's a full bar, and consumption during screening is highly encouraged. In fact, it's part of the Galapagos biz model. Which means you can get all liquored up while watching the flick. And even if you hate the doc, at least the booze was top-shelf…

New sketches
Here's some photos of another project that I started work on during my DPI residency. Again, this was made possible with DPI equipment. The photos were taken by Monica Ruzansky in August 2008, when I was projecting onto a building just off of St Marks Place in the East Village. These are very early sketches of a project that I will continue to develop over the next year.

Hal Eagar : #16 How do you document your work on a show?
DPI:
How do you document your work on a show? Video, pictures, ground plans? Wiring diagrams? Written instructions?
If I'm building the show and running it, I rarely get around to any real technical documentation, but if I'm handing it off to someone then I try and do as much as possible. And when I pack up and back up a show I try to do at least a nice long text description of the setup.
I've tried taking photos of a setup, but it always seems useless. The video of what the piece looks like is really useful though. It may not help you remember any of the tricks of the video system, but it's great for trying to recreate the piece.
I really like to color code my wiring diagram, and I seem to almost always have the flash
IDE open on my computer so I'll end up doing a wiring diagram with little
handmade graphics of the video devices in flash. I also like to build it in layers, so you can
output a diagram of all the VGA cable, and of all the composite cable, and of
all the computer cable separately.I figure I really ought to be using a drafting program but, it works so far.
But at least 50% of the documentation is just in a textual description of how everything should work, and what order to do things in.
And if possible what things to check if something is going wrong.

Chiptunes
Chiptunes, what do you mean [...] what like laptop DJ's [...] ok it's Uber-Geek, but it is any good?
Now the easy way to get all your chiptunes questions answered without even having to haul yourself out to some really fun party at a cool and almost always cheap and welcoming venue.
How? The Pitchfork Chiptune documentary.
Reformat the Planet: Chapter 01

and if you think you might be able to haul yourself out to see that then keep your eye open for:

Isadora - Quad Distort Actor
I've mentioned that I love Isadora, and I have a lot of patches that might be useful so I'm going to try and share a few here. If you have any problems or questions about Isadora feel free to ask me, and I'll see if I know or can figure out how to help.
You will have to have "the newest" or close to newest version of Isadora to open my example files (1.2.9 on the Mac, or 9b51 on the PC)
One of the things I love the most about Isadora is the Quad Distort Actor. I had been using my own cobbled together software in which this was the primary feature, and when I started using Isadora I though that it was so much better than everything I had tried, if only it had this one more feature. Well Mark added the feature and I was hooked.
The simple explanation is that a Quad Distortion actor is just Like a Projector but you can control it's corner points to correct for even radical keystone distortions.
I think this is obviously useful, but I want to point out some of the great things that it makes possible.

PS122 : THE PASSION PROJECT
Reid Farrington Presents : THE PASSION PROJECT
PERFORMANCE: Sept 10 20 2008 $20 7:30pm (additonal shows 9PM Sept 12,13,18,10)
Performance Space 122
150 First Ave. NY, NY
"One of the most satisfying theatrical experiences I've had in ages"
blogs Claudia La Rocco after previewing The Passion Project.
"[Reid Farrington has] a way of engaging with history and making
this historical work contemporary by exploiting the very distance
that exists between us and it."
Using a single live actor and multiple projection surfaces, Reid
Farrington explores the intersection of performance and film. He
uses Carl Th. Dreyer's 1928 immortal masterpiece, "The Passion of
Joan of Arc" as the main narrative along with the history behind the
making of the film, a discussion with a Danish archivist, the story
of making this project, and Joan's story; her trial, torture, and 'execution.
THE PASSION PROJECT explodes the film into the three
dimensions; placing the audience inside the film, sitting next to
Joan, subjecting them to the relentless rhythm of 30 mm film
projection. This piece vibrates between performance, film and
installation.
Developed at and with the support of 3LD Art and Technology
Center. Also developed with the support of Digital Performance Instituteand Ideal Glass Gallery.
